Last year, Katy Perry sold her $18 million Beverly Hills mansion and moved back to her hometown of Santa Barbara. But the “American Idol” judge has unsurprisingly decided to keep a residential toehold in Los Angeles, where she recently paid $11 million for one of the swankiest condos in the infamous Sierra Towers skyscraper.
Described as a “junior penthouse” in the listing, Perry’s new house in the sky was sold to her by Jen Kao, the daughter of billionaire Garmin founder Min Kao. Records indicate Kao acquired the 3,000-square-foot condo in 2016, paying $9.3 million, and subsequently spent another small fortune customizing the place to suit her bespoke taste. The unit was first put on the market earlier this year and spent a few months listed at $12.5 million before Perry came calling.
Indeed, this place is full of sumptuous oddities — there’s a ruby-red movie theater, a built-in yoga wall and a wet bar hewn almost entirely from exotic zebra wood. The condo’s floors and doors are all black walnut hardwood, and there are automated blackout shades and steel windows throughout. Glass doors open to a balcony with jetliner views over the hills.
Other amenities include a sleek and chic kitchen with premium appliances and a walk-in pantry, a private office and a master suite with a marble bathroom. Even the unit itself is unusual and bespoke, having been created from combining two smaller condos into one larger space with two large bedrooms and three bathrooms.
Lording high over the often traffic-choked intersection of Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, the Hollywood Hills and the western end of the Sunset Strip, the Sierra Towers skyscraper has been an iconic part of the L.A. skyline since its 1965 completion. Designed by noted architect Jack A. Charney, the 31-story building has been a favorite of celebrities for decades, and current residents include the Osbournes, Adam Sandler and Mary Hart.
Presumably Perry will share her L.A. pied-a-terre with longtime partner Orlando Bloom, and they’ll likely want to get plenty of use from it — HOA dues are a throat-drying $5,294 per month. Those dues help pay for a slew of building amenities, including 24/7 security and concierge, a communal outdoor swimming pool, fitness center and valet parking.
The “California Gurl” now primarily resides in Montecito, where three years ago she spent $14 million on an estate near the home of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry. As for Kao, she’s moved to a hilltop Beverly Hills home bought several years ago from Jodie Foster.
